If you ask any material yard in Indiana what their best-selling product is, most of them will say the same thing: #53 stone. It is the default driveway gravel across the state, and for good reason.
But what exactly is #53 stone, and why does it outperform other options?
What Is #53 Stone?
#53 is a designation from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) aggregate classification system. It refers to a specific gradation of crushed limestone that includes a mix of stone pieces ranging from about 1 inch down to fine dust-sized particles.
That mix of sizes is what makes it work. The larger pieces provide structure and load-bearing capacity. The fine particles — called “fines” — fill the gaps between the larger pieces, creating a dense, interlocking surface when compacted.
Why #53 Works for Driveways
It Compacts
This is the single most important characteristic. When you spread #53 and drive on it or compact it with a plate compactor, the angular, crushed pieces lock together and the fines fill the voids. The result is a hard, stable surface that resists rutting and displacement.
Round stone like pea gravel never achieves this. The pieces roll against each other instead of locking, which is why pea gravel driveways feel loose and shift underfoot.
It Drains
Despite compacting into a firm surface, #53 still allows water to pass through. This prevents puddles and standing water on the driveway surface. Proper drainage extends the life of the driveway and prevents the soft spots that form when water gets trapped.
It Is Affordable
#53 is one of the most cost-effective aggregate products available. It is quarried locally in Indiana, produced in large volumes, and does not require special processing. That keeps the price per ton lower than decorative stone products.

How Thick Should #53 Be?
- New driveway: 4 to 6 inches of #53 over a base layer of #2 or #4 stone. Total driveway depth should be 6 to 8 inches.
- Top-off: 2 to 4 inches over an existing gravel surface.
- Parking pad: 4 to 6 inches is sufficient for passenger vehicles.
Maintenance
#53 driveways are low-maintenance but not zero-maintenance. Plan to:
- Top off every 1 to 2 years with 1 to 2 inches of fresh stone
- Regrade annually by dragging the surface to redistribute stone that has migrated to the edges
- Fill potholes and ruts as they develop, rather than waiting for them to worsen
With basic upkeep, a #53 gravel driveway lasts indefinitely. You are not replacing it — just refreshing the surface layer periodically.
