How Much Mulch Do I Need? Simple Formula and Guide
You know you need mulch. The question is how much. Order too little and you are making a second trip. Order too much and you have a pile sitting in your driveway.
Here is the formula, a quick coverage chart, and some practical tips for getting your order right.
The Formula
Length (ft) x Width (ft) = Square Footage
Square Footage / 100 = Cubic Yards Needed (at 3 inches deep)
That is it. One cubic yard of mulch covers approximately 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, which is the recommended depth for most landscape beds.
Quick Coverage Chart
| Bed Size (sq ft) | 2” Deep | 3” Deep | 4” Deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 0.6 yd | 1.0 yd | 1.3 yd |
| 200 | 1.2 yd | 2.0 yd | 2.5 yd |
| 300 | 1.9 yd | 3.0 yd | 3.7 yd |
| 500 | 3.1 yd | 5.0 yd | 6.2 yd |
| 1,000 | 6.2 yd | 10.0 yd | 12.3 yd |
How to Measure Your Beds
Rectangular beds: Measure length and width. Multiply.
Circular beds: Measure the radius (distance from center to edge). Use the formula: radius x radius x 3.14 = square footage.
Irregular beds: Break the bed into rough rectangles or circles, calculate each one, and add them together. It does not need to be exact — you are estimating, not building a bridge.
Multiple beds: Add up the total square footage of all beds, then calculate cubic yards for the total. It is easier to order one delivery than calculate each bed separately.
What Depth Should I Use?
- 2 inches — minimum effective depth. Works for refreshing beds that already have some mulch. Provides basic weed suppression.
- 3 inches — the standard recommendation. Good weed suppression, moisture retention, and appearance. This is what most homeowners should target.
- 4 inches — use around trees and in beds where weed pressure is heavy. Do not exceed 4 inches in flower beds — too much mulch suffocates roots.
Should I Order Extra?
Add about 10% to your calculated amount. Mulch settles slightly after spreading, beds are rarely perfectly flat, and you will always find a spot you forgot to measure. A little extra is better than running short.
Bulk vs. Bagged
Bagged mulch from a hardware store covers about 2 cubic feet per bag. You would need 13.5 bags to equal one cubic yard.
At that rate, mulching a 300 square foot area at 3 inches deep requires about 40 bags. That is a lot of trips to the store and a lot of plastic packaging.
Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard and is significantly cheaper per volume. For anything larger than a couple of small beds, bulk is the better value.
