Choosing mulch sounds simple until you are standing in front of five different options, trying to figure out which one will actually look good around your house six months from now. Color, material, longevity, cost — it all matters. This guide breaks down the most popular mulch types and colors so you can pick the right one for your yard without second-guessing yourself.

Why Mulch Matters More Than You Think

Mulch is not just decorative. A proper layer of mulch retains soil moisture, regulates ground temperature, suppresses weeds, and slowly feeds nutrients back into the soil as it decomposes. In central Indiana, where we swing from frozen ground in March to baking heat by July, mulch acts as insulation for your plants’ root systems year-round.

Without mulch, flower beds dry out faster, weeds take over sooner, and your landscaping looks tired by midsummer. With the right mulch applied at the right depth, you cut your watering needs, reduce maintenance, and keep your beds looking sharp from spring through fall.

Mulch Types: What Are Your Options?

Hardwood Bark Mulch

Hardwood bark is the workhorse of residential landscaping. It breaks down at a moderate pace, which means it feeds the soil while still lasting a full season. It has a natural, earthy look that works with almost any home style.

Our Natural Hardwood Bark is a great all-purpose choice. It is affordable, holds its color reasonably well, and blends into the landscape without drawing too much attention to itself. If you want your plants to be the star of the show rather than your mulch, hardwood bark is the way to go.

Cedar Mulch

Cedar mulch is a step up in both performance and price. The natural oils in cedar resist insects and slow down decomposition, which means it lasts longer than standard hardwood. Those same oils give cedar mulch a pleasant, distinctive scent that many homeowners appreciate, especially in the first few weeks after application.

The Cedar Mulch we carry delivers real cedar mulch benefits: natural pest resistance, slower breakdown, and a clean, light brown appearance. It is one of the best mulch options for flower beds where you want long-lasting coverage without frequent top-offs. If you have had problems with ants, termites, or other insects near your foundation plantings, cedar is worth the investment.

Colored Mulch (Black, Red, and Brown)

Colored mulch is dyed hardwood, and it gives you more control over the look of your beds. The dyes used in quality colored mulch are iron-oxide or carbon-based — safe for plants, pets, and soil.

Midnight Black Bark is our most popular colored option. Black mulch creates high contrast against green foliage and brightly colored flowers, giving beds a clean, modern look. It also makes lighter-colored stone and pavers pop.

Red Mulch makes a bold statement. It pairs well with brick homes, red accents, and warm-toned plantings. Red is a polarizing choice — people tend to love it or skip it entirely — but when it works with a home’s color palette, it really works.

Coco Bark, our chocolate brown option, splits the difference between natural and colored. It looks like rich, fresh soil and blends naturally with almost any landscape. If you want the color consistency of a dyed mulch without the boldness of black or red, Coco Bark is the safe bet.

Black Mulch vs Red Mulch: How to Decide

This is one of the most common questions we hear. Here is a simple framework:

  • Choose black mulch if your home has neutral siding (gray, white, beige), if you want a modern or clean look, or if your plantings include a lot of color you want to highlight.
  • Choose red mulch if your home has warm-toned brick, if you prefer a traditional Southern or Southwestern aesthetic, or if your beds are mostly green foliage without a lot of flower color.

Both fade over time. Black mulch tends to fade to dark gray; red mulch fades toward a muted brick tone. Fading is normal and unavoidable with any dyed mulch. You can slow it down by applying mulch after the heaviest spring rains have passed and by choosing a quality product with better dye penetration — which is exactly what we stock.

How Deep Should You Mulch?

Two to three inches is the target for most beds. Less than two inches and weeds push through too easily. More than four inches and you risk trapping too much moisture against plant stems, which can cause rot.

If you are refreshing existing mulch that has thinned out over the season, one to two inches on top of what is already there will bring it back to the right depth. Pull mulch a couple of inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent moisture buildup against the bark.

When to Mulch in Indiana

The sweet spot in central Indiana is mid-April through May. You want the ground to have thawed and warmed up enough for spring growth, but you want mulch down before summer heat starts drying out your soil. Mulching too early — while the ground is still cold — can actually delay soil warming and slow down your perennials.

A second light application in early fall can help insulate roots heading into winter, but it is not strictly necessary if your spring layer was applied at the right depth.

How Much Mulch Do You Need?

A cubic yard of mulch covers roughly 100 to 160 square feet depending on depth. Most homeowners underestimate how much they need. Measure your beds, calculate the square footage, and we can help you figure out the right quantity so you are not making a second trip or running short halfway through the job.
